Sanitation workers said the bins normally don't fall off before being emptied into the truck, where the trash goes through a compactor. After Alex adopted him, PJ more than doubled his weight to 24 pounds, started sleeping on Alex's bed and pillows, and even became snuggle buddies with his new dog sister Fiona. The promise Dr. Austin made Dylan almost disappeared along the way.

As the years passed, he tucked the promise away and nearly forgot about it.

Until his graduation approached and Dylan’s mom asked him who he wanted there…. and Dr. Austin was number one on his list.

And when Dylan finally saw her, he told me: "I didn't even think it was real. I was like, am I dreaming right now?"

The hug that followed lasted nearly a full minute.
But graduation wasn’t the end of their story.

🚲 Royal's entire encounter with Teresa was captured from his point of view because he happened to be wearing Google glasses while riding his bike. Teresa was 75 years old and had been diagnosed with dementia the year before. She was carrying a grocery bag and purse when Royal found her struggling in the heat, and after he helped contact her son, paramedics treated her for possible heat exhaustion. The kids never knew their movie trip almost didn’t happen.

Sean told me the students had no idea the promised funding had disappeared. As far as they knew, the trip they’d spent weeks looking forward to was happening exactly as planned.

And there was a reason Sean rented the entiretheater instead of just buying tickets.

He told me some of these kids have never even been to the other side of the highway. Some live in homes where four kids sleep in the same room, and he said some don't even have a mattress of their own.

"They have to share everything with everyone," Sean told me. "But for this one day, they had an entire theatre to themselves."

When he told the kids they'd have the theater to themselves, Sean said they immediately felt “important and special.”

But this wasn't the first time Sean had quietly stepped in to keep a promise at the school.

The year before, funding for their end-of-summer trip to a water park also disappeared. Sean stepped in then too, paying about $3,000 so 120 kids could still go.

In 2019, he founded Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope, a nonprofit that supports child advocacy centers and children experiencing abuse.

Sean has also written four children's books, and he told me he uses royalties from those books to help fund the foundation and step in when children and families need immediate help.

But Sean doesn't want these kids to pay him back.

Before the movie, he asked them to do something else instead:

"As you get older in life, help other people as a payback to me."

Maybe that's the part of this story that hasn't happened yet.

I was at a resort pool in Central Florida spending the day with my family when one of them pointed out a lemonade stand raising money for pediatric cancer.

They know I'm always stopping to support causes like this, so I walked over to make a donation and learn more.

And that’s when I met Lucy’s dad, Jordan. We started talking, and at some point in the conversation, I mentioned that I started a good news channel called Majically.

His eyebrows went up, and he said, "I think I know Majically."

I laughed and said, “Oh really?”

And he said, "I think you already know our daughter. You shared Lucy's bell-ringing video a few years ago.”

At first, I couldn’t place it because I've shared thousands of stories over the years. But then Jordan pulled up the video on his phone, and the second I saw it, I said, "Oh my gosh... I remember Lucy."

A few minutes later, Lucy’s mom Jessica also walked up, and we spent the next several minutes talking about Lucy, her mission, and everything that had happened since she rang that bell.

Jordan and Jessica refused to let the mission stop. They pushed through those six days after Lucy passed to reach that $100k milestone. They said donations trickled in all the way up to the reveal party, and it hit exactly $100k on the dot.

I was shocked to learn that all of this happened after she rang that bell years ago.

These two parents, along with Fourth and Gold, have now raised more than $315,000 for pediatric cancer research in Lucy's honor.

But what really blew my mind was how close this story came to never happening.

I live in Central Florida and normally would've never gone to a resort pool that close to home. But that day my little cousin had a cheerleading event out there, so our family decided to go for the day.

And as it turns out, it was also the first time Jordan and Jessica had ever hosted one of Lucy's Lemonade Stands at a resort.

If either one of those things hadn't happened, we probably never would've met.
