A 13-year-old boy is being praised for his quick thinking after helping a 92-year-old woman escape her burning home in the Hunter region of New South Wales.
Luke Mullard was on his way home from school in Thornton on November 13 when he heard a loud bang and saw thick smoke rising from a nearby house. He jumped off the bus and ran toward the scene, where he found Roma Wilson trapped outside her home as flames and explosions erupted.
Luke called Triple Zero (000) and helped guide Ms. Wilson from the smoke-filled yard to an air-conditioned car, where she stayed safely until emergency crews arrived. Just moments after he reached her, a major explosion occurred at the property.
Ms. Wilson said she had been watching TV when she smelled smoke and discovered her garage was filled with it. As she tried to call for help, Luke arrived and reassured her that emergency services were on the way.
“Just so wonderful, he’s only 13,” Ms. Wilson said.
The fire, which also destroyed a van in the driveway, is believed to have been caused by a battery from an electric scooter.
Luke later said he was simply in the “right place at the right time,” but the experience has inspired him to pursue a future career as a first responder. After the rescue, he even went straight to his part-time job as if nothing unusual had happened.
Local police later visited Luke and told his family he had saved a life.
