Owl Becomes an Unexpected Tree Topper After Flying Down Family’s Chimney

A Virginia family got a Christmas surprise straight out of a storybook when a barred owl flew down their chimney and perched on top of their Christmas tree just days before the holiday.

Savannah Burgoyne was home with her young children in Arlington, Virginia, when the owl swooped through the living room and settled neatly on the tree, instantly becoming the most majestic tree topper imaginable.

Burgoyne called the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, and officer Spencer Murray responded to the unusual holiday house call. His plan was simple and safe: allow the owl to tire itself out as it flew between the tree and nearby kitchen cabinets, then gently guide it outside using a large net and the home’s double French doors.

The owl was safely captured and released back into the suburban skies, much to the family’s relief. Murray later shared photos of the rescue on social media, reminding homeowners to keep chimneys capped with wire to prevent curious wildlife from wandering indoors.

Burgoyne joked she was only disappointed that the owl didn’t arrive with a letter from Hogwarts.

To make the moment even more memorable, the Animal Welfare League surprised the family with a special holiday gift, an owl tree topper to replace the star that collapsed under the weight of their beefy Christmas guest.

Safe to say, the Burgoyne family already has a perfect idea for next year’s Christmas card.
