A teenage immigrant whose life was once saved by a stranger’s compassion is now giving that same gift back alongside the very surgeon who helped him survive.
Mesfin Yana was born more than four decades ago in a rural village in Ethiopia and developed rheumatic fever as a child, a condition that severely damaged his heart. His journey toward survival led him to Addis Ababa, where American physician Dr. Rick Hodes helped arrange lifesaving care in the United States. With support from Children’s Cross Connection International, Mesfin traveled to Atlanta and underwent open heart surgery at Piedmont Heart Institute, where cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jim Kauten repaired his mitral valve.
Complications later required a second surgery and a mechanical valve replacement, a procedure that ultimately meant Mesfin needed to remain in the United States for ongoing care. Along the way, he was welcomed into the homes of Americans who became family, including cardiologist Allen Dollar, whose support helped Mesfin build a new life.
Grateful for the second chance he was given, Mesfin dedicated himself to medicine. He studied in Georgia, trained as a perfusionist at the Texas Heart Institute, and now works at the Mayo Clinic, operating heart lung machines during complex cardiac surgeries.
In a powerful full circle moment, Mesfin now returns to Ethiopia with the nonprofit Heart Attack Ethiopia, volunteering his skills to help children suffering from the same heart conditions he once faced. On one of those missions, he reunited with Dr. Kauten, this time not as patient and surgeon, but as colleagues working side by side.
Beyond his medical role, Mesfin also serves as a vital bridge between volunteer doctors and patients, translating in Amharic and helping families feel safe and understood.
What began as a single act of kindness has grown into a lifetime of service, proof that compassion can travel across borders and come back multiplied.
