Kevan Chandler was the second of his siblings to be diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, type 2, a rare neuromuscular disease that affects muscle strength and mobility. But in 2016, Kevan and a group of close friends proved that limitations do not have to define adventure.
The friends set out on a three week journey across Europe for what became known as We Carry Kevan. Leaving his wheelchair behind, Kevan’s friends took turns carrying him in a backpack as they traveled together, sharing meals, memories, and miles across borders.
The experience grew into something far bigger than a trip. Today, Kevan is an author and international speaker who shares stories about friendship, disability, and what it means to truly show up for one another. He has spoken at TEDx events, Google, and conferences, universities, and organizations around the world. Kevan is also the founder of We Carry Kevan, which has grown into a global community centered on connection and support.
At home, Kevan’s life is filled with quieter joys. He and his wife Katie enjoy spending time together, growing vegetables in their backyard, baking homemade bread, and reading to each other.
What began as six friends with a dream to travel has become an ongoing journey of friendship, family, and a worldwide community reminding people everywhere that no one has to be carried alone.
