Firefighters in Georgia are turning windows into wish lists this holiday season.
For the third year in a row, the Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) teamed up with Santa and a few superheroes to rappel down the outside of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, surprising young cancer patients who cannot leave their rooms. This year’s visit included appearances by Santa, Superman, and Spiderman, creating moments of pure joy for kids watching from behind the glass.
The tradition began as an idea in 2018, inspired by the hospital’s close proximity to the fire station. After careful planning and coordination led by Section Chief Kyle Sweeney, the first official rappel took place in 2022. Since then, it has become one of the department’s most meaningful annual events.
“It’s a simple interaction, but it has a huge impact,” Sweeney said, explaining that firefighters are used to arriving on people’s worst days, which makes moments like this especially powerful.
One firefighter, Cody Minter, joined the event for the first time this year after his own son was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. Although his family did not witness the surprise firsthand during treatment, seeing the joy it brings to patients inspired him to get involved.
On December 19, ropes were secured, harnesses fastened, and heroes descended past hospital windows, waving, smiling, and sharing high fives through the glass. Afterward, Santa joined firefighters inside the hospital to deliver donated gifts from the Sandy Springs community.
With support from local fire departments, state agencies, sports teams, and community organizations, the event continues to grow each year, proving that even small moments of joy can make a lasting difference. ✨
