An 88-year-old Michigan veteran who captured hearts on TikTok is waking up to a life-changing surprise.

Ed Bambas, who was still working full-time at a local supermarket, was shocked when strangers from around the world donated more than $1.7 million to help him retire and pay off medical bills. The outpouring of support came after Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer shared Bambas’ story online.

In the now-viral TikTok video, Weidenhofer approaches Bambas during his shift, asks about his life, and leaves him with a $400 tip before telling him he wants to share Bambas’ story to help him retire. The video has since reached more than 10 million views and inspired a GoFundMe fundraiser.

Bambas returned to work nearly a decade ago after his wife died following a long illness and his former employer eliminated his pension. He said mounting bills left him with no choice but to keep working 40 hours a week, first at a hardware store and later as a cashier at Meijer.

When Weidenhofer surprised him with a large check totaling over $1.7 million, Bambas broke down in tears.

“Thank you… oh my God,” Bambas said in video shared by ABC Detroit station WXYZ. “I wish my wife were here, but it’s something that dreams are made out of.”

The funds are expected to help Bambas pay off debt and retire for a second time. As Weidenhofer said, no 88-year-old should have to work simply to survive.
