At long last, her carriage has arrived.
After 640 days of patient waiting, a 4-year-old terrier mix named Louise, affectionately dubbed “Princess Louise,” finally found her forever home. And in a moment fit for a fairytale, her send-off from RG Cares Animal Shelter in Pomona, New York, was captured in an emotional Instagram video that has now gone viral, racking up over 1 million likes since June 22.
In the now-famous footage, shelter staff and volunteers cheer, tear up, and give Louise a heartfelt farewell as she trots out of the building, tail wagging. Soundtracked by Good Neighbours’ “Home,” the video follows the moment Louise is lovingly handed to her new “person.” And just before hopping into the car’s backseat, Louise pauses… and gives one final glance at the people who loved her for nearly two years.
“The way she took one last look back 🥹,” read the caption by @Rachels.Dogs and @FourLegsGoodNYNJ. “Two weeks ago, the perfect applicant came along for our longest shelter resident, Louise. After a few meets, we knew this was her forever.”
“Louise’s person finally found her. 640 days of this princess waiting patiently, finally all paid off,” it continued. “Go get it, Louise. You waited long enough, sweetie!”
Rachel Oldenburger, the adoption and foster coordinator, knows just how much this means, not only for Louise, but for all the shelter pets still waiting. “To see her be overlooked so many times, and then to go viral for the world to see gives me so much hope for all the shelter dogs around the country who just need that ONE person to come along for them,” she told PEOPLE.
“Shelter dogs are fabulous dogs,” she added. “And I hope Louise’s story inspires even just one person to go adopt a local shelter dog.”
The caption to Louise’s video says it best: “Our staff clapped her out to celebrate this huge win for Louise, but also to keep the hope alive that their people will come… Please, please, please consider adopting a shelter dog. They need us more than ever, and you quite literally are saving the life of a dog in need.”
