Don’t you wish all used car salesmen were like this one in Gladstone, Missouri?
When a mom came in back in June to buy a car for her college student, she thought she was getting a reliable set of wheels for the commute to school in Kansas. J.P. Knudsen, the owner of Northtowne Auto Group outside Kansas City, sold her a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with 85,000 miles and a 30-day, 1,000-mile warranty.
But just a few months later, and about 2,000 miles down the road, the car’s motor gave out. The mom asked J.P. for a free inspection, which confirmed the worst. Most dealers would’ve shrugged and pointed to the expired warranty, but that’s not how J.P. runs his business.
“She only put 2,000 miles on the car. Yeah, she signed a 30-day, thousand-mile warranty. We could’ve been jerks like every dealership in the United States and said, ‘Well, too bad, you own it,’” J.P. explained in a TikTok video that’s now gone viral with more than 48,000 likes. “Nope. Not at Northtowne, not with J.P… I take care of my people. Thirty-two years in the business. It’s just what we do.”

He told the mom to come back later that week, he’d get her a different car for the same money she’d already spent. No hidden fees, no finger-pointing, just good, old-fashioned customer service.
“What are we gonna do?” J.P. asked his followers. But really, he already knew the answer. “So we’ve got nothing,” he said about the warranty coverage. “But, I’m gonna take care of the customer.”
Among thousands of comments, the mom, Shannon Burger, jumped in to share her gratitude, with many others promising they’d buy their next car from Northtowne, too.
And J.P. said it best: “That’s what we’re supposed to do in this world is take care of people.”
