When Sofia Nielsen stepped up to the mic for her salutatorian speech, no one expected her to turn graduation into a heartwarming art show.
“Reach under your chairs,” the graduating senior said.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd of students at Notre Dame Academy in Staten Island. Then came laughter, cheers, and the shimmer of surprise. Each of the 110 graduating seniors held a hand-drawn portrait of themselves. Sofia had sketched every single one.

“I used photos from last year’s yearbook and FaceTimed friends while secretly working on the portraits,” Sofia said. What started as a “crazy idea” blossomed into a two-month labor of love, finished just two days before graduation.
The portraits weren’t just pictures, they were keepsakes, carefully crafted tributes to a shared chapter of life. “They’re a reminder that everything you have done here at Notre Dame will always be a part of you,” Sofia told her classmates. “A way to immortalize our legacy.”

In the fall, Sofia will head to Macaulay Honors College at the College of Staten Island to study nursing, but she says art will always be part of her life. She plans to keep painting in her free time and hopes to continue growing her budding art career.
Sofia didn’t just graduate with honors, she gave her classmates a moment (and a masterpiece) they’ll never forget.
