There’s a stack of stories out there just waiting to be told, and James Patterson wants to make sure they finally see the light of day.
The bestselling novelist and true crime writer has launched a brand-new initiative called the “Go Finish Your Book” campaign. The program offers emerging authors up to $50,000 each to help them complete their manuscripts.
“There are so many incredible stories out there that never get written because life gets in the way,” Patterson said in a statement. “I wanted to give these writers a little time, a little space, and a push to say: your voice matters, now go finish your book.”

Twelve lucky writers were announced as the first recipients, chosen from hundreds of submissions. Their projects span everything from memoirs to graphic novels, showing just how many different ways a story can come to life.
One of them, Jungin Angie Lee, is working on a short story collection. For her, the grant couldn’t have come at a better time. “I aim to write a thoughtful, meaningful, powerful book that sheds light on friendship, family, and disability, particularly the intricacies of giving and receiving care, and the ‘Go Finish Your Book’ grant comes to me as an extremely generous, much-needed burst of motivation and boost of confidence,” Lee said.

Patterson’s program was built with help from PEN America, the Authors Guild, and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, a dream team of literary champions.
After years of giving millions to literacy programs, bookstore employees, and librarians, Patterson is now investing directly in the future of storytelling. And for these 12 authors, it’s a reminder that their voices matter, and that the world is ready to hear them.
