When Allen Sweppenneiser’s father, Harry, became too sick to attend his son’s wedding, the nurses at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia did something extraordinary, they brought the wedding to him.

Harry was battling a serious infection that led to the amputation of his legs, making it impossible for him to leave the hospital. But thanks to a group of big-hearted nurses, he didn’t have to miss one of the most meaningful moments of his son’s life.

“We had one of our nurses give him a shave and a haircut the day before; we had one of the nurses make a boutonniere; we had got an outfit down for him to wear,” said Julie Seman, the Nurse Manager who helped organize the surprise.

At first, the staff hoped to livestream the ceremony, but when that proved too difficult, they came up with something even better, a wedding right there at the hospital, filled with love and care.

Allen and his wife were already planning to travel nearby for their honeymoon, so the visit felt meant to be. “For our honeymoon, we were going down to New Jersey. We have to pass Philly on the way to get there, and we were just like, well, why don’t we just stop and see him,” Allen said.

The moment Harry saw his son in his wedding attire was unforgettable. “Just seeing him and his reaction, it was everything. And, you know, I wish he was there in person, but it was better that everyone teamed up to make this happen,” Allen told 6 ABC.

Harry passed away a short time later, but not before sharing in his son’s special day, a memory that will forever live in the hearts of the Sweppenneiser family and the nurses who made it possible.

“There’s nothing like it. It’s why you go into healthcare. It’s why you help people,” said Julie Seman.
