High School Volleyball Team Surprises Their Favorite Custodian with a New Car

At Community High School in Collin County, Texas, the Lady Braves volleyball team knows how to rally, not just on the court, but in real life too.

For years, Abel Rodriguez has been a constant presence at the school, supporting its athletic programs and cheering on the students at every turn. “He’s just really helpful, honestly,” said Addee Kuenstler. “He supports us through everything. He’s our biggest cheerleader.”

Recently, the team learned that Abel didn’t have a car of his own. After staying at the school until 1 a.m. waiting for a ride one night, the students knew they had to do something. They launched a GoFundMe campaign and raised more than $3,000 on the very first day. Soon, donations had grown to $9,000, enough to get him behind the wheel of a brand-new car.

Local supporters joined in on the generosity. Group 1 Ford of Rockwall heard about the campaign and helped make the students’ plan a reality. The J.R. Arey State Farm Agency added insurance and gas money, making sure Abel’s new ride was ready to hit the road.

The surprise came Wednesday afternoon. Abel was “called outside for an emergency,” but instead of a mess to clean up, he found over 100 people cheering and chanting his name. His new car was waiting for him, sparkling under the Texas sun.

“Seeing the actual car here is just such a miracle,” said Jorryn Collins. “We wanted to repay him for all that he’s done for us.”

Abel couldn’t hold back his emotions. “I’m so happy with the community,” he told NBC’s KXAS News. “I love you. I love you forever, guys.”

And as he drove off, the Lady Braves knew they had given him more than a car, they had given him a little extra joy, wrapped in the love of a whole community.
