What started as a simple takeout order turned into an unexpected act of kindness for a small burger joint in Nova Scotia.
On Oct. 1, Laura and Darcy Clarke, owners of Bentley’s Burgers and Fries in West Chezzetcook, N.S., received a phone order for two cheeseburgers and two fries. They prepared the food and waited, but the customer never showed up. Since no-shows happen from time to time, the couple gave the meal to another patron and moved on.
About a month later, however, the Clarks were stunned to find a letter in their mailbox. Inside was an apology and money to cover the cost of the missed order. The note explained that the caller had accidentally phoned the wrong restaurant and was never anywhere near Nova Scotia. The call had actually been made from Warrior, Alabama.
“Obviously, I called the wrong restaurant,” the customer wrote, adding they hoped the enclosed amount would cover their “embarrassing mistake.”
Darcy said he was completely surprised by the gesture. After sharing the letter on Facebook, the post quickly took off, earning hundreds of reactions and comments. According to Darcy, it reached 40,000 views in just one day.
The response, he said, felt like a reminder of something simple but powerful. With a laugh, Darcy summed it up as “hope for humanity,” adding that it was nice to see honesty and kindness still shining through.
Sometimes, even a wrong number can end up meaning a lot.
