After ten long years in an animal shelter, a Texas dog finally found her forever family.

Jill the shelter pitbull, who has lived her life in the Clay County Animal Shelter, hasn’t had much luck in terms of adoption.

“We’ve had several applications put in on Jill before, but because she is a pit, a lot of landlords wouldn’t allow them to have her. Since there was trouble finding her a family, and this is a no-kill shelter, it became her home and the workers became her family.” Bonnie Stone, the shelter manager, told KFDX-TV.

The shelter grew fond of the dog, and through the years, their bond grew.

While Jill was situated with her shelter family, waiting for a new home, Kellie Blassingame began her search for a new pet with the plan to adopt an older dog in early July.

“All the other dogs were very sweet [Jill] just naturally gravitated towards me. I just knew that a lot of the time, senior dogs don’t get adopted very often, so that was one of the main reasons I wanted to adopt an older dog,” Blassingame recalled.

After happily adopting Jill, Blassingame shared this story on social media to show the world that senior dogs deserve the same affection and devotion as the younger pups.

“My thing is she got adopted July 4, Independence Day. Jill got her Independence!” Stone said, excited for Jill’s newest phase of her life.
“Jill Jellybean” is the dog’s new nickname, full of love from her now forever home, and family.
